Hi there, it’s Riiid TUTOR! Have you ever waited nervously for your TOEIC test results? Did you ever expect that you would easily score 800 points on the TOEIC, but actually get around 700 points? Or, for those of you who haven’t taken the TOEIC test yet, did you ever wish to get more than 800 points from your very first TOEIC test?
I brought two questions today for those of you who are curious to check whether you are at the 800 score level in TOEIC. Among the TOEIC Part 5 questions that Riiid TUTOR provides, these were the questions that people who score 700 level mostly get wrong, compared to those who score over 800. These two questions will not be an absolute indicator of the 800 score level in the TOEIC, but they will help you estimate what level you are at with the TOEIC. Try solving them to find out your TOEIC level.
The first question to figure out if you can score over 800 in TOEIC
This is the first question to find out if you can score over 800 in the TOEIC test.
Question 1.
Despite the anticipated three month wait, the city managed to _______ the building permits in under two weeks.
(A) express
(B) construct
(C) influence
(D) issue
How was it? Were you able to solve it easily? I’m curious as to which answer you’ve chosen, for those of you who are aiming to score over 800, so let me take a guess.
Did you pick (B) construct? Did I guess right? If you chose (B) construct, unfortunately, you may not be able to reach the 800 score level in TOEIC. But it’s too early to be disappointed. If you improve your skills before taking an actual TOEIC exam, you will definitely be able to get the 800 points range on the TOEIC. I’ll let you know the answer soon, but before that, would you like to know how I was able to guess that you will choose (B)construct? I’ll tell you how.
An analysis of the learning data of this problem held by Riiid TUTOR showed that an overwhelming 49.18% of those who have scored 700 points level chose (B) construct. This is nearly half of the TOEIC users in the 700 score level range. Compared to those who scored above 800 points on TOEIC, the incorrect answer rate was 27.3% higher. Why was there such a difference?
To issue a permit.
Despite the fact that the wait time was expected to be 3 months, the city managed to ______ the building permits in under two weeks.
The answer to this question was (D) issue. The question required choosing the most appropriate verb vocabulary for the blank. In the sentence ‘the city managed to ______ the building permits in under two weeks,’ it is most natural to take ‘the building permits’ after the blank as the object, so that the sentence would mean ‘the city gave a permission ‘. Therefore, the answer would have to be ‘issue’. (A) express means ‘convey’, (B) construct means ‘build’, and (C) influence means ‘impact’, which are all incorrect because they do not match the logical flow of the sentence.
Those who chose (B) construct as the answer in this question probably didn’t know the meaning of the verb “issue”. They didn’t know that issue was used as a verb, so they looked at the word “building” after the blank and chose “construct” as the answer that seemed the most relevant. It was a good try, but it was wrong. In order to get a high score of 800 or above on the TOEIC test, you need to know a lot of vocabulary that is frequently asked on the test, and some of you may still lack your vocabulary skill. Shall we take a look at one more question?
The second question to figure out if you can score over 800 in TOEIC
Question 2.
Redwaste. Inc. was fined five million dollars for allowing _______ to flow into nearby streams.
(A) profits
(B) devices
(C) concepts
(D) pollutants
How was this question? Let me guess which option was chosen by people aiming for a TOEIC score level of 800.
Did you choose (A) profits? Was my prediction right again this time? If you chose (A) profits as the answer, you are also likely to not be able to reach the score above 800 just yet. If you want to reach the TOEIC score level of over 800, you may need to try a little harder. I’ll explain why I expected you to choose (A) profits.
After analyzing the learning data of this problem held by Riiid TUTOR, we found that 33.46% of TOEIC users with a score level of 700 who tried solving this problem chose (A) profits. That’s a pretty high figure. Compared to those who scored over 800 points on TOEIC, the incorrect answer rate was 27.3% higher.
What causes the company to impose a fine?
The company was fined for allowing pollutants to enter the stream.
The answer was (D) pollutants. This question was about choosing the appropriate vocabulary to go into the blank. The ‘______ + to flow into nearby streams’ part after ‘allowing’ is the reason why the company paid the fine.
Therefore, (D) pollutants, which can be placed in the blank and create a meaning of “to allow pollutants to enter the stream,” is the answer. (A) profits means ‘benefit’, (B) devices means ‘equipment’, and (C) concepts means ‘notion’, which are all incorrect because they do not match the logical flow of the sentence.
Those who chose (A) profits as the answer in this question probably didn’t know the meaning of the verb ‘fine’. When fine is used as an adjective, such as “I’m fine,” it has a positive meaning such as “good,” or “okay,” so some of you may have thought that it was used to convey such a positive meaning in this sentence.
However, ‘fine’ can also be a noun that means ‘fee’, and it can mean ‘to impose a fee’ when used as a verb. It’s a completely different meaning when it is used as an adjective.
If you want to get a high score on the TOEIC test, you should not study your vocabulary word for word; when memorizing words, you shouldn’t memorize it by just a single definition. If there is a second or third meaning that is often used, you should memorize them as well.
